Mission Statement:
IEC Chesapeake’s Governmental Affairs Committee will serve as the link to local and state governments as well as an advocate to address legislation and regulations that could positively or negatively impact our members. The Governmental Affairs Committee will build brand identification for IEC Chesapeake with policymakers.
The Committee will advocate on behalf of labor, tort, tax and regulatory issues as well as issues specific to the electrical trade issue. The Committee will meet with elected and appointed officials so that they may gain a better understanding of issues important to our members.
The Governmental Affairs Committee will need assistance by generating consensus among members on issues and having members take the time to testify on legislation or meet with policymakers. IEC Chesapeake’s Governmental Affairs Committee will take the lead in reaching out to groups that share our vision on various issues. The Governmental Affairs Committee will assist members in solving problems with government.

IEC has a new & dynamic legislative program designed to cover a wide range of issues, while providing a strong presence and unified voice on Capitol Hill. IEC has expanded its monitoring and lobbying activities at the Federal level. IEC currently monitors:
- The regulatory activities of 7 Federal Departments & 12 Federal Agencies
- The legislative activities in 17 full committees and 27 subcommittees in the U.S. Congress
IEC is involved with the important issues that have a direct impact on your business. Some of which include:
- Training and Education Issues
- Stopping Union "salting" abuse, by working to pass amendments to the National Labor Relations Act to protect the "Open Shop" philosophy and the right to work · Raising the jurisdictional threshold of the National Labor Relations Board
- Active lobbying campaigns on regulatory issues that positively and negatively effect your business
- Monitoring of state legislative activity and work closely with each IEC state chapter focusing on Project Labor Agreements, Utility Deregulation, Apprentice Ratio's, and Codes & Standards
