“May is Electrical Safety Month and Eaton’s Wiring Devices is celebrating by raising awareness and providing safety tips to help prevent electrical hazards in your home.
· Tamper-Resistant Receptacles
Each year, more than 2,000 children suffer severe electrical shock and burns when they insert foreign objects into the slots of electrical receptacles. Tamper-resistant receptacles feature spring loaded shutters that combat against foreign object being inserted thus reducing the risk of injury versus a standard receptacle the offers no protection.
· Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Receptacles
A GFCI is a device the protects against electrical shocks by eliminating the power being delivered through the device when it detects that the electrical current is flowing along an unintended such as through water or a person. Today’s GFCI’s feature “Self-Test” diagnostic technology which routinely check the electrical components for the device to ensure it is operating properly and will notify the end user through with a visual or audible notification if the device fails inspection.
· Arc Fault Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (AF/GF) Receptacles & Breakers
Eaton’s Arc Fault Ground Fault (AF/GF) receptacles and breakers are designed with the safety of the user in mind. AF/GF receptacles protect against both unexpected electrical paths to ground and unseen arc faults that can result in electrical fires. The dual purpose device provides ultimate protection available in either a wall box mounted receptacle or a circuit breaker mounted in the distribution panel. Eaton is the only manufacturer to provide both AF/GF receptacles and breaker.”
These are simple upgrades to your home- if you don’t have them, you should. I can’t tell you how many older homes, in particular, I have walked into, and seen a regular outlet only in the bathrooms and powders- this is a must have GFCI location as are kitchens and laundry rooms/closets.
