Foreman Training – REGISTRATION CLOSED

An event every week that begins at 5:00 pm on Monday, repeating until March 1, 2021
Intended audience: Foremen, Superintendents, Lead Men, Forward Thinking Apprentices
This program is intended to be an intensive and comprehensive approach to gaining, increasing and/or refining skills critical to executing the duties of a field supervisor.
Class dates are Mondays January 4 – March 1 (No class on 1/18)
Class 1: The Role of the Field Supervisor
You were promoted to field supervisor either because you were fast or you were good, or maybe both. But now you constantly get flack form the office about not keeping up on your paperwork and other documentation. What the heck is your job? In this session we’ll outline in detail just what it is that you’re supposed to be doing, how you know how you’re doing, and how you’re supposed to be working in concert with the rest of the management team in your company.
Class 2: Documentation and Communication – Being the Eyes and Ears of Your Company
You’re it! You are the eyes and the ears of your company. They’re not out there with you on a day-to-day basis, so they can’t possibly know what’s going on. So how come you suck a this so badly? I know…you see your job as the pusher…the one who keeps it moving, and gets it done, and while that’s part of your job, that’s not enough. You can’t complain about the office not supporting you if you don’t learn how to document and communicate well. Here you’re going to learn how to do this much better.
Class 3: Your Role in Planning & Scheduling
Ah…the subcontractor as victim…the GC puts together a schedule without any input from you…heck, your own office does that too, and what the heck…everything is going to change anyway, so basically what you do is follow the lead of the GC and try to simply keep up. He secretly tells the concrete guys and the drywaller to push the job, and you run like heck to keep from getting buried. Tilt! Nope, your job is to learn how to plan and schedule properly, and then how to know how to protect your firm when the GC is constantly changing things. In this session you’ll learn just that.
Class 4: Maximizing Field Labor Productivity
Your job is to maximize field labor productivity while maintaining the highest level of quality and customer control…and to maximize field productivity. You’re probably pretty sure that it’s not by screaming at the guys, but there are still some screamers out there. This session is about you becoming a master at understanding what really matters, and how to tweak the engine to get more performance out of it.
Class 5: Leading from the Middle of the Pack
So, you’re not in charge of the project…you’re smack in the middle of the pack. You have to deal with the customer, the other subs, the suppliers, and your office. They’re all pulling you in different directions, so how do you chose make takes priority? In this session we’ll show you tools for successfully keeping all the balls in the air and how to lead from the middle of the pack.
Class 6: The Cost of Lost Time, and what to Do About It
Do you have any idea about how much money slips between the cracks in your company each year? It’s the death of a thousand cuts, and you have the ability to stop much of the bleeding. In this session we’ll show you where the money goes, the magnitude of scale of the losses, and what you can…must do about it.
Class 7: Managing Change on Your Projects
As soon as the project starts things begin to change. Too often this is used as an excuse by project team management. You’re supposed to expect that. You’re supposed to have planned for that. Can you list the top 20 things that happen on every job that change the plan almost daily? I’ll bet you can name a bunch…the GC’s pouring out of sequence, your PM didn’t get the equipment to you on time, you got rained out, another area isn’t ready for you to start on time, etc. Okay, of you can list them, then you should be able to plan for them, and know exactly what you’re going to do when it happens. Here you learn how to get much, much better at managing change.
Class 8: The 10 Commandments of Field Supervision
Finally, after learning everything that you’re supposed to be doing a you super field supervisor, we’ll boil it down to the 10 things you need to do throughout your career in order to achieve maximum success. Do these and your job will be easier, you’ll make more money, and sleep better at night.

About the Instructor:
Kirk Alter has more that 30 years experience as a contractor and educator in the electrical and mechanical industries. He has worked his way through the industry as a Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, Estimator, Operations Manager, and Vice President of a $120M firm. Since 1995 Kirk has developed University level Undergraduate and Continuing Education Programs for electrical and mechanical contractors. Kirk has provided instruction for IEC chapters nationwide, ABC, and Purdue University.
