I know we are… a LOT more. Admittedly, it’s easier to do Fall and Winter outside in Houston, but the rules are the same everywhere when it comes to outdoor outlets.
Are you protected correctly? If you’re in an older home, you might not have the best weather proof outlet covers, or “in use” covers. Look for the “bubble”. Intermatic has your back!
If you’re building new or updating old- the code now requires a protected GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) out of doors, front and rear of dwelling. A proper cover not only protects the outlet while in use- and makes it waaaay easier to use- it also protects the outlet when not in use, through all kinds of weather.
Note that, if the outdoor outlet is in a fully exposed location ( ie. not under a porch or covering on dwelling) the cover MUST be “while in use” cover, for optimal protection of the outlet and against shock.
Rule of thumb: the shock of winning a million dollars is good. The shock you get from a poorly covered or ungrounded outlet while setting up holiday lights is terrible.
Go ahead…run outside right now and take a look at your outdoor outlets. Let’s get you up to date! Our Associate Partners at Colerick Electrical Sales and Intermatic can answer all of your weather proof cover questions. Visit Colerick Sales
