Our friends and Associate Partners at EATON are sharing valuable information with us- enjoy!
“May is National Electrical Safety month, a time set aside to help remind our partners and customers to educate themselves on the latest in electrical safety codes and products. Eaton’s Wiring Devices develops products which adhere to the codes and standards agreed on by the National Electrical Code (NEC) which protect people and property. Eaton would like to encourage you to familiarize yourself with the 2020 NEC code changes and its code compliant products.
What is the National Electrical Code?
The National Electrical Code is a committee responsible for setting the minimum standards for safe electrical installation and ensuring that the electrical systems behind our walls are safe. The NEC is published every three years and most states adopt the most recent publication shortly after.
How GFCIs are affected by the 2020 National Electrical Code?
Ground-fault circuit-interrupters are covered in Article 210 of the NEC covering branch circuits. The NEC lists the following required branch circuit locations to be protected by GFCI technology: bathrooms, garages, outdoors, crawl spaces, basements, kitchens (countertop receptacles), sinks (within 1.8 m, 6 ft), boathouses, bathtubs, laundry areas, and indoor damp and wet locations. The Code also requires that GFCI protection shall be installed in a readily accessible location. One key update is GFCI is now required to protect 125-volt to 250-volt receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground from the former 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-amp receptacles covered in NEC 2017. To learn more about GFCIs and how they are affected by the 2020 National Electrical Code, please read Eaton Code and Standards Specialists, David Smith, article, Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Protection: Installation Tips and NEC-2020 Updates https://eatoncertified.com/sites/default/files/2020-02/P10-14_Smith_David.pdf)
Eaton’s GFCI Offerings
Eaton’s Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) receptacles are circuit interrupters designed to recognize a ground fault in your wiring and immediately break the flow of electricity, thus protecting you from electrical shock. Further, they prevent resetting if, once tripped, the ground fault renders the device no longer functional. Eaton GFCIs are tested to the highest standards and provide dependable, state-of-the-art protection suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial settings, including homes, offices, hospitals, schools, and even outdoor applications. When combined with Eaton’s AFCI technology, Eaton’s ground fault circuit interrupter receptacles provide fire and electrical safety in one device (AF/GF) and are also available in breakers.”
